19th Sunday after Trinity

In this Sunday’s Gospel (Matthew 22.1-14) Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a wedding banquet, into which it is not possible to come without a wedding robe. People have debated for centuries what the wedding robe might signify, but it seems that St Augustine got it right – it surely signifies love for God and love for one’s neighbour, without which it is not possible to be for long in the presence of God. Love opens all doors.

Collect

Faithful Lord,

whose steadfast love never ceases

and whose mercies never come to an end:

grant us the grace to trust you

and to receive the gifts of your love,

new every morning,

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
