16th Sunday after Trinity

This Sunday’s Gospel sets before us a parable of Jesus which shows us how God is infinitely generous. The owner – symbolising God himself - calls people to work in his vineyard at different times of the day but ends up paying each of them the same wage. From a human point of view that could seem crazy, irresponsible, or even

plain unjust. But God’s point of view is never a human one. We see appearances but God sees the heart. It is for God, the ultimate judge, who always judges according to his nature (which is one of mercy, justice and love), to decide what he will give us. None of us deserves anything by right because all that God gives us comes always from his grace.

Collect

Almighty God,

you have taught us through your Son

that love is the fulfilling of the law:

grant that we may love you with our whole heart

and our neighbours as ourselves;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
